Canal Country Wine Trail
The Ohio and Erie Canal was built in the early part of the 19th century and completed the final water link, via the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Today remnants of the Canal are preserved in an area rich in history, beautiful scenery, unique cultures, natural resources and leisure activity options. Dotted throughout the region are some of Ohio’s most charming wineries.
In the 1800’s the Ohio and Erie Canal helped open the state to settlement, then led the way to the emergence of significant agricultural and industrial developments that are influencing activities through to the present day. Along the Canal path, visitors can explore the geological elements left behind by ancient glaciers. There are remnants of Native American cultures, pioneer settlements and early railroads. The southern terminus Corridor (designated as a National Heritage Corridor and encompassing the Cuyahoga Valley Park) leads to the very popular Amish Country and its quaint culture. They can explore a Towpath Trail that runs through the heart of the Corridor. Within the Corridor, or just a short drive away are several fine boutique wineries.
We invite you to explore all of the historical, recreational and cultural delights of the region as you travel the Canal Country Wine Trail.
